Minecraft is played by millions all over the world, and it is not hard to see why. For the first time, friends can build things together and create their own virtual world. Also it is child friendly, so parents don't have to worry about their kids turning to first person shooter games for a while.
Maybe you can't afford Minecraft, or you don't want to pay for something that you may regret later on. Well, here is a list of the 20 most popular Minecraft alternatives. The good thing is, most of these options are free (only a few are paid alternatives).

Roblox is a sandbox game like Minecraft. You can make maps and play with other people on them. You can set up a variety of games like dodge the tornado, tycoon type games and many others. You can quite literately make any game you want! All with bricks! You can customize your avatar with different clothes and items. Roblox is the next best game from Minecraft, in fact I like it better.
2. Eden: World Builder
Eden: World Builder is an iOS app which is not free. But it is very cheap. Eden only features a building feature at this time though. So if you enjoy the building aspect of Minecraft, then this is the game for you. Although, it is still a good game for people who might want to use up some free time by building wacky creations.
The only downside to this app, is that the controls are hard to master. Nevertheless, when you do master them the game is enjoyable. You will never run out of blocks as you have an unlimited supply!
FortressCraft is an Xbox game which you will have to pay for, but it is also very cheap compared to Minecraft. FortressCraft enables you to explore the world and build freely. It keeps you from doing pointless activities like resource collection, so you can get into the game and start playing straight away.
If you don't want to buy the full game at first, there is a free trial edition available. Also on FortressCraft, you can access a variety of online multiplayer game modes. Social skills are not required, but they certainly make the game better.
Survivalcraft is the best Minecraft clone for your phone. To me, it beats Minecraft pocket edition by a long way. In this game you can do everything that you can on Minecraft. Collect resources, build structures and craft items. When you first enter the game, you are abandoned by a ship on a deserted island. It is up to you to survive.
Impressively, the world map is randomly generated each time. So you will not get bored of the same map! But like all other Minecraft type apps, the controls are difficult to master. This game does require a fee.
StarMade is a game available on PC for free! It is best described as Minecraft in space. You can build your own world and ship. With that ship you can visit over players worlds or you can battle them. Also you can find a clan, which means that you can fight battles together and rule the universe.
If you don't like all the multiplayer action, this game still suits you. You can simply build your ship and go exploring other planets. There are hundreds to discover, and all of them are different. I find this quite impressive, as some games usually use the same textures and maps over and over.
Terasology is a 3D block world, with stunning graphics. These graphics, are so impressive that it doesn't make the game seem like it is a clone. The game features a day and night cycle with a pixilated moon! What could be better? Well, it is also free! Yes a visually impressive game like this is free! I think it beats Minecraft!
Gnomescroll is a darker version of minecraft where monsters are always lurking. In this sandbox game, you can collect resources, mine and craft new items. There will be terrifying monsters lurking around every corner, so keep an eye out. The monsters also drop items so be sure to pick those up to!
This game is free to play and it is available on the PC. The game will need to be downloaded and installed, but so does Minecraft!
Worldcrafter is more of a Terraria clone, but it is still enjoyable. It is a 2D game play, which allows you to side scroll but you can still perform normal activities. For example, you can grow crops, design buildings, construct traps, breed animals and battle groups of zombies.
This is a paid game, but it is either a decision of love it or hate it. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend you to purchase it if you really needed that money. You can purchase it from the Google Play store here.
Brick-Force is a fun FPS and Minecraft mix game. You can build your base, with turrets and various other things, and then shoot your enemies with a variety of weapons available from the shop. This game is free and is on the PC! It runs on nearly everything, and it is really fun to play. The controls are easy to master and you can spend hours playing on the game, without really thinking what you are doing.
If Brick-Force appeals to you, you can read my Brick-Force guide and find out about other things in the game. Also you can find some tips there to make the game much easier!
10. King Arthur's Gold
King Arthur's Gold is a free to play PC game. It is a fast paced 2D game, which makes you build weapons to destroy the enemy or defend from them. The game has three classes to choose from which are the knight, the archer and the builder. The knight is a fighter with a sword and shield. The archer can take out enemies at long range with its bow and arrows. The builder can construct traps and build defences for your base.
There is something for everyone! There is a premium option available at $25.
Infiniminer is another free PC game. In this game, it is all about mining. It was the first 3D block game to be released, to try and get people to work together. You have to excavate gold coins and gems. The team who excavates the most wins! It is a simple game to understand and play. Let your mining addiction be free!
12. Epic Inventor
Epic Inventor is a Terraria clone. It is a very enjoyable and fun game to play. It combines role-playing with real time strategy gaming. You can build your own city, weapons, robots and all from gathering resources from mining.
You will need to put turrets around your city though, as there will be scary monsters trying to attack you. Don't let your hard work get ruined. As time progresses, you can have lumber mills and other stuff so mining doesn't become that important. For a free game, it is excellent!
13. Ace of Spades
Ace of Spades needs to be purchased from Steam before you can play it, but it is very enjoyable. It is a FPS game but it allows players to build bunkers and other defensive structures around themselves. It has a variety of game modes and you can even dig underneath the map for a suprise attack!
Brick-Force is a free alternative to this game, which is also listed above!
MythRuna is a free to play PC game. This game is visually stunning. It is the same as Minecraft but I think it has better graphics than Minecraft by far. MythRuna does have an endless randomly generated map, so you will never reach the end whatever you do. This game just entices you by the graphics. They are high-quality graphics, that you haven't seen on any other block game.
15. Clonk Series
Clonk Series is a free to play PC game or you can pay for other versions of the game. This game is like Epic Inventor, and it is amazing. This game makes you advance your civilization as far as you can by gathering resources like wood, mining ores and other stuff. Then when you have those resources, you can upgrade your civilization.
The game also boasts multiplayer functions, so you can play with your friends. Clonk Series is a fun mix of strategy, skill and action.
Terraria is similar to Minecraft but not completely the same. The game is more focused on an adventure side, where you can battle monsters and bosses along the way. Furthermore, the game also has an RPG feel as you can trade items with NPCs so you can manage your inventory. Also this means that you can upgrade your weapons and continue your adventure.
Even though this isn't a free option, try it out! I believe the adventure side of the game will keep you playing for ages, so it will be well worth the money.
Blockland is a Lego style of Minecraft. It is a very fun game to play and the graphics are very friendly. Blockland is less focused on mining and gathering resources. This is good, as the game offers several different mini-games and you can just focus on building your creation!
The game can run on nearly any system, which is a bonus as it will run smoothly and not be all clunky. You can also destroy your creation with the game physics.
18. Block Story
Block Story is more of a MMORPG Minecraft experience. It features quests, items, drops, pets, crafting and you can use different equipment. In this game, you can level up your character by doing quests. You can ignore these quests and go exploring, or you can do them and level up your character. This offers a more exciting game play as you can do a multitude of things.
19. Manic Digger
Manic Digger is the best free Minecraft alternative. It has all the options you could want, and the graphics are high-quality! You can build almost anything you can imagine, so why not give it a go. The game also has loads of mods and servers to play on. The server types usually are survival or building types. This is the Minecraft alternative that you have to look at!
20. Cortex Command
Cortex Command is a game where your sole objective is to destroy the enemies base. You can mine gold to use, create items and objects and the way you attack or more importantly defend. It is not a Minecraft clone specifically, but it is a fun alternative.
